What motivates us?

When watching interviews with or presentations by people claiming to be “Scientologists,” I am struck by an array of creepy traits which characterizes all of them. The recently “leaked” video (featuring Bart Simpson, of all people – or rather his voice) represents a salient showcase of the disarmingly strange demeanor of these particular membots.

The following is a list of behaviors or traits one can witness in the “committed” Scientologist:

Hyper, over-the-top enthusiasm
A starry-eyed, yet vacant look in the eyes
Jumbled jargon
The Inarticulate attempting to be articulate
Very unconvincing conviction
Speaking very rapidly, slurring words, using abstract language
Uttering non-sequitor exhortations
A sense of bizarre arrogance disguised as “self confidence.”

I’m reminded of a narrative from American Psycho, adapted for this post:

There is an idea of a Scientologist; some kind of abstraction. But there is no real person: only an entity, something illusory. And though they can hide their cold gaze, and you can shake their hands and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense your lifestyles are probably comparable…They simply are not there.
